Eli's 5th Grade Year

We have made it to the end of the school year!  Whew, this has felt like a long year between really hitting it hard before the baby was born, then a long break and then pushing really hard from January until now to get it done!  I am always thankful and relieved when we make it to the end of the year and realize how far we've come!  Eli was the first one done this year and he had a pretty great 5th grade year. He would still rather be doing pretty much anything over school, but he puts in the work when he needs to and is very smart! We will do a little celebration for him soon as he "graduates" elementary school and moves on to middle school! I can't believe I now have 2 middle schoolers. I worked with middle schoolers for years and years at church and it is just hard to believe I have kids in that age group now!

Leeland 6 Months

6 Months have passed way too fast, that is all I am going to say about that! But we have loved having Leeland join our family and he feels perfect in every way to us!

Leeland now weighs about 17 lbs.  Putting him around the 40% for height and weight.  He is fascinating us with all his new tricks and we couldn't believe how early he started crawling. He also sits up now! So he loves to explore. He is trying more and more new foods. We've started adding some baby led weaning foods (toast, steamed apples, eggs) into his routine of purees. He really likes the real food!  He still eats around the clock which is a bit of a bummer because we are TIRED parents.  We cannot figure out how to get this boy out of the sleep rut but we keep trying!  I am not a huge fan of crying it out and even the few times we have tried to, he never relents so it doesn't really work anyway.  He's strong willed like the rest of us in this house!

All that to say he has a very sweet personality, loves his siblings and is generally happy and loves to explore. He really only gets upset when he is hungry or tired so he's pretty easy going. He is already getting quite clingy to mama which feels really early. Honestly everything he's doing feels really early! We love him so much and are enjoying him so much! He's as sweet as sugar!

Sabrina's 10th Birthday

They all continue to grow too fast!  It is unbelievable to me that my precious little happy baby Sabrina is growing into this incredible young lady right before my eyes!  I adored her as a baby and I adore her as a big kid too!

Her 10th Birthday was a VERY big deal to her and it is to me too, double digits!  She wanted to go someplace nice and new for her birthday lunch!

They were both mesmerized!

Then off to one of her favorite places to play games. This girl is pretty dang good at getting stuffed animals, balls, candy out of these machines!

Then we had a little party to celebrate our ballerina!

All she really wanted for her birthday was an electric scooter and she was thrilled when she opened it!

Happy Birthday Sweet Sabrina! It has been a joy and privilege to watch you grow up over these last 10 years. You are growing into quite an amazing young lady. It is so fun to talk to you and spend time with you as you get older. I love how you talk a mile a minute. I love that you are silly and fun. I love seeing you grow into all God wants you to be. You are smart and tenderhearted. You love animals. You are up to try any new experience and have so many hopes and dreams for your future.  I can't wait to see all the amazing things you will do in your life!

When I First Saw You

This is my first Mother's Day as a mother to 6.  Wow, I have 6 little ones who call me Mom, what an honor. I know I take this privilege for granted at times but I am truly so thankful and so blessed to be a Mom.  It is the most ordinary, extraordinary thing title I will carry in this life!

Malachi, the first time I laid eyes on you, my heart was beating a thousand beats per minute. I had been picturing this moment for months upon months. We flew half a world away, waited what felt like forever for the van to arrive to go and get you.  I will never forget when they called us to go into the baby house, walked up those stairs and saw you for the very first time!  You were facing away from me and all I could see what this chunky little boy with a head full of hair sticking straight up, sitting in a bumbo.  I didn't even think, instantly I just knew I needed you in my arms!  You didn't cry, you just stared and took us in!  It felt like time stood still!  You were a dream come true and finally in my arms! I couldn't wait to get to know you!

Eli, the night you were born was something!  The second I saw you I was scared for you. I will never forget the look in your Dad's eyes when I told him my water just broke. The scared drive to the hospital because I really had to do this!  The fairly smooth labor, it honestly felt too easy for a first labor!  Seeing you born, you were so tiny and you were fighting to breathe. It was the scariest moment of my life and I couldn't believe you had to leave me in an ambulance. I cried and cried in that empty hospital room after you left.  I will never forget walking into the NICU the next day and seeing the cords and wires keeping you alive.  I wasn't prepared but we both stayed strong and you were finally put in my arms, right where you belonged! It was exactly what we both needed! I never wanted to put you down!

My Sabrina Fair, the day I held you was pure bliss! The perfect, redeeming moment I needed!  Your labor was a dream come true, quick and fairly easy.  Before I even knew it, you were in my arms and the world stood still again. You were the perfect little dream girl and I snuggled you for so long and just soaked in the time with you. There was no rush, no hustle and bustle, the room emptied and it was just you and I (and Daddy). I couldn't even believe I had a daughter! You were amazing and easy and precious and just everything we needed!

Our precious LB, you were another whirlwind. I was a ball of nerves as we traveled to be there for your arrival. The wait for word on your induction. The call that we were to meet your birth  mom at the hospital.  We learned so much in that short time with her.  Going to lunch and giving her some time to rest. Arriving back to find we had just missed your arrival (you arrived much faster than they anticipated). I will never forget standing next to your birth mom as she introduced you to us! You weren't even that old, but that sacred moment where she handed you to me - wow! We went into a separate room and while the time was stressful your Dad and I soaked you in. You were so tiny and cute and just everything - our second daughter!

Then our Ayla!  You my dear, we waited years for you to join the family and you took your sweet time arriving on the scene.  I had never experienced a labor like yours. It was a long day in the hospital and quite painful as we approached pushing time, but you finally decided to join us. I will never forget coming face to face with you - hearing we had another daughter and seeing your sweet face for the first time!  Another baby I got to soak in the moment with for as long as they'd let us. You gave us an earful about joining the party but I just marveled at your perfect little cheeks and how alert you were!  You seemed perfect in every way!

And then our Baby Leeland. You just continue to surprise us in every way.  Your arrival was full of twists and turns. I will never forget waking up to labor pains, a very painful drive to a different hospital than we were planning, with different doctors and contraction after contraction. You were in a hurry and not waiting for anything. It was the most intense thing I have ever experienced and I was just full of relief as I reached for you and brought you to into my arms. I was the first one to notice we had another precious boy after 10 years! I am so glad we had that hour of snuggles because things went downhill from there in a blur of hard days! I couldn't even really process that you would also be leaving me in an ambulance. There is still a mix of emotions surrounding your birth but I am just so thankful you are okay and the perfect little addition!

What a blessed Mama I am to have these sweet babies. The journey's were all so different but the feelings of meeting each of them was the same!  They were mine and so loved. I owe Mother's Day to them, they made my dreams come true by just existing!

Easter

Easter was a blur, sandwiched in the day between 2 birthday's in our house. So we knew this was going to be an incredibly busy, but fun weekend! The morning started early with the kids hunting for their baskets!

Then we headed outside for the kids to hunt eggs. This was a tradition that Peter's parents started and they just so happened to be in town for the holiday so they were able to do the work of the big egg hunt!

This year was Ayla's year as she really got the hang of the egg hunt!

Little man was full on observing so he will be ready to hunt next year!

Ayla is always thinking

After the egg hunt we hung out and had lunch with Peter's parents before heading over to my Grandma's house for what has been a tradition my entire childhood and now passed down with my kids.  The big kids often hide the eggs for the younger kids, who in this case were LB and Ayla!

It was a great day and we had way more dessert than we could ever need, especially with all the birthday fun too!  We jumped straight from an exhausting Easter into birthday gear for the next big birthday in the house!

Malachi's 12th Birthday

Somehow we are moving right along into the next phases of parenting, leading us all the way up to having a 12 year old. I officially feel old and like I have a big kid with a couple more joining him on the horizon! I have to say, I am enjoying this phase a lot more than I ever thought I would. Big kids are so much fun! They're sarcastic and funny, I see their independence and responsibility growing! We have great conversations, we find more things we have in common and I love exploring their differences and all the things they're into. I am actually really looking forward to these teenage years with them!

So back to Malachi's birthday!  First stop with him was to look for some new video games.

Second stop was a big ole steak lunch!

He also had an adorable little tag along for his celebration!

Snacking on steak in the car

Got some new gear for his favorite teams!

And then a few games

And fun presents

and ice cream cake with trick candles

He also celebrated with a little birthday party

Malachi, you are growing into quite the amazing young man. I have so much fun with you and love chatting and hanging out with you. You're teaching me more than I ever thought I needed to know about sports but it is fun to have someone else in the house to watch games with!  You are the most loyal fan to all of your teams and I hope someday they will be good and win it all for you! It is fun watching you grow in your hobbies and also grow in responsibility. You are still the kindest human I know and you seem to know anybody and everybody and everybody loves you because they see how amazing you are!  I cannot believe how fast 12 years have gone but we want to soak up these next few years with you before you start stretching those wings out to fly more and more! You are so loved and such a blessing! Happy 12th Birthday!

How is it REALLY having 6 kids?

I always wanted a big family. I was the kids who loved all the babies and helped out with babies anytime I could.  I was the teenager with the full babysitting schedule.  I LOVED watching my nieces every second I could or helping out with my cousins twins. I helped a lady with an at home daycare. I watched kids at church every week while the moms were in Bible study. I eventually babysat every morning for a family I adored!  I loved kids and knew that I wanted a whole bunch of them!

We got married young and figured we were on about a 3-5 year plan before having kids. Peter still had 2 years of school and we knew I was going to stay at home after having them so we wanted to be as financially stable as we could. What I didn't account for is how soon after the wedding I wanted to be a mom. It instantly felt like the next natural step to me even though I knew we had to wait. I REALLY struggled during those years with having patience around kids.  Now I look back and think how special those days were where it was just the two of us. If I knew then that we would have at least 30 years of children in the home to come, I probably would have appreciated that nice quiet, little home a bit more!

About the time Peter graduated from college (2 years of marriage) and started working, I think I wore him down with my impatience and we decided we could find a way to make having a baby work into the plans and budget.  I was so excited to make my dream of being a mom come true! I will never forget how optimistic I was that it would happen right away and how shocked I was when it didn't. The thought never even crossed my mind that we would struggle to conceive. I just knew I was meant to be a mom, so it didn't  make sense to me.  A year later, still no baby.  We were at a crossroads deciding between fertility medications or adoption. I just did not have peace about seeking fertility meds and since adoption was already part of our plan we jumped right into that process.  A year later (4 years of marriage) we added Malachi to our family and 6 months later Eli!  My dream had come true in a big way! I loved having these two little boys! I was so happy!

It wasn't long at all before I found out we would be adding Sabrina to the family.  I cried, so taking care of the boys must have been a lot of work.  I was so grateful but shocked! I remember taking the test, seeing it was positive, and then coming down and looking at 2 little boys in high chairs eating their breakfast and wondering how I was going to handle 3 so close together!  Peter and I both do not have a lot of memories from when we had 3 little ones in the house.  It truly was an exhausting blur.  I had 2 toddlers who were sooooo busy and a tiny baby.   I wish I could go back and spend more time with those 3 little ones, soaking it all in because it went so fast!

For whatever reason, about the time Sabrina was 18 months, we were really feeling like we should adopt again. I don't even know how we though we were ready back then but it just felt right, and it was. By the next summer we were going to meet our LB!  What a whirlwind and for the first time I felt maxed out and like maybe 4 kids was enough. Peter was very adamant at this point that 4 kids was all we were going to have and I felt similar, but wasn't ready to shut the door.  We agreed to not make a permanent decision either way until the other person felt the same way.

A couple more years passed and we were pretty content with 4 kids. At times it felt like the perfect number. But I still had this nagging feeling like someone was missing.  Peter was aware of this, but I never pushed him to see things my way. We would talk about whether or not we would have more kids but it was never a pushy discussion and I was pretty confident I wasn't going to convince Peter to add anymore kids.  I remember on my 30th birthday he told me that he was open to having one more baby!  I was so excited! Neither one of us was ready to make the jump to 5 kids quite yet but my brain was swirling with plans. I don't remember the exact timelines but we had to wait through Zika risk after our 10th anniversary and then I was a match for bone marrow donation and had to see that process through which took us all the way to almost 2 more years of waiting.  I once again, wrongfully assumed it wouldn't take very long at all to get pregnant after Eli and Sabrina being surprises. Again, totally shocked when it didn't happen right away.  15 months later and I gave up. I had started obsessing about this and felt like for my mental health I needed to just let it go and be content with the 4 kids God had blessed us with.

I honestly don't even know why God chose the moment I let the dream go to bless us with Ayla, but that is how it worked out.  It had beenover 5 years since we had a baby in the house and the anticipation and the joy from the older kids throughout the whole pregnancy and having a baby was everything I could ever hope for. We were very convinced that this would be our last baby....  Until I was post partum. I remember one night in particular where I was rocking her in her bedroom and just crying because I had told Peter she was the last one but I had this nagging feeling that she needed a little sibling and wasn't the last one after all.  There was a sizeable gap between her and LB and I felt like she needed a close buddy too.  I was prepared for Peter to totally shut down the idea but apparently his heart has changed over the years too and he wasn't opposed to more kids. So we decided we would wait and see how we were feeling around the time Ayla was 2.

God had his own timeline again and Leeland joined us sooner than we were thinking but what I have learned through the timeline of having all of our babies - I wouldn't change a thing!  I say all this because I want to make it clear that I know each of these babies is a huge blessing. They all have their own stories that led them to us and their own timelines for how that happened. My plan would have looked completely different but I'm glad it worked out the way it did.  Full of trials, waiting, surprises, joy!

So how do I feel as a mom to 6?  Honestly it is every bit as exhausting as you would think.  Most days I feel completely wiped by the time I get to bed.  There is rarely a break with 6 kids, especially with our decision to homeschool 4 of them.  I forgot how hard it is to have a toddler and a baby at the same time because it has been 7 years since we had that combo.  The sleepless nights that continue on and on require a lot of dedication to accomplish any tasks during the day and keep up on life. Then we have big kids who are constantly running to and from activities in between their school schedule. There are days that I want to burst into tears at how hard and exhausting this is.  There are many days where I feel like the most blessed woman alive to be surrounded by all these little ones or guilty that I might be failing them. I don't feel like I can think a thought without a child approaching me needing my help with school, or a toddler asking for juice or a trip to the potty. Or a baby needing to be fed or waking up from a nap. Some days Peter and I are laughing at the chaos and joking about more kids. Other days we sit down in silence with nothing left in the tank, dreaming of the day we have more to give to each other.  It's a balancing act for sure, and one that we have not perfected and probably never will!

The biggest thing for me is I just want to savor and enjoy the moments.  I am learning just how much fun every age group is. I love seeing my big kids and their interests and all they enjoy going and doing. I love conversing with them and listening to what they share with me.  I love our crazy, busy toddler and watch her explore and learn about the world and life.  She's a sponge! She makes all of us laugh a hundred times a day! I love baby snuggles and kisses and watching Leeland start to learn new things. There are challenges, but there is so much good! Parenting feels all encompassing right now and as in everything, that is the season we are in right now and I can constantly feel it in my heart - I am going to miss this!  As hard as it is, these days are so rich and everything I could have ever wanted. We have so many fun milestones coming in the years ahead. I know when I am an old woman surrounded by lots of grandkids and great grandkids that the momentary challenges we are facing right now will be so minor. We are building a legacy and I hope the kids will look back and not see our many imperfections but see that we loved them with all of our hearts and did everything we could to help them follow their dreams. 6 kids is a lot of kids, but boy what a blessing they are!
