Start of the Year Trip

We always try to get away before Peter starts a new job and we wanted to take full advantage of the time he still had off this time and we knew just the place we wanted to go!  What could be better in January than a cabin in the snowy woods!

To make this even better, we left on the very first day of the year and I couldn't think of a better way to start the year than to go on a little week long trip with my little family!

I have always loved this couple hour drive, it is just gorgeous and epitomizes Oregon perfectly! Even though the area has been severely burned in 2020, with the snow it was jaw droppingly beautiful to me!

And then we arrived into Central Oregon, my most favorite place!  I just love all the mountains!

It was a perfect week before life got real again! Honestly the transition to 6 kids has been one of the more challenging transitions. I assume it is because we have 4 active and busy bigger kids and a very active, too smart for her own good 2 year old and a newborn who has his nights and days mixed up!  I know the transition back to real life with school demands for 4 and a toddler and a baby is going to be a huge challenge. Plus Peter will be transitioning to a job that is going to be very demanding of him as he builds a tax team for a rapidly growing company all over again.  He is going to be very busy with work and I am going to be very busy with everything household related so we have a lot going on! I just so appreciated the time we have had to transition over the course of these last 2 1/2 months and we were so grateful for this last little bit of time away to relax and enjoy family time before getting back to life!

To make the trip even better, our mountain passes have been dumped on with snow before we left and then as soon as we arrived a blizzard basically went through the mountains.  I think every single mountain pass was closed at one point!  So we woke up one morning to more snow than we have ever had in our lives which was so fun for the kids!

We watched movies and shows in the evenings, and we had a popcorn thief on our hands!

Played in the snow all day!

lots and lots of real snow cones!

I would LOVE to live someplace with more snow in the winter, there's just something so peaceful about looking out at the snow covered trees!

Lots of warm snuggle time too!

We had a long driveway so Peter had a bit of work on his hands with the snow dump. Of course after he dug himself out a crew came along and plowed the driveway but he got some exercise in!

The biggest goal was to get out to ski at least once.  We were at the base of the mountain so a ski resort was only about 20 minutes away.  The blizzard made conditions really rough and we had to move around ski lessons a couple times and then they were cancelled completely when the roads got shut down overnight.  We almost gave up hope for this trip but we noticed there was a little break in the weather on our very last day and they just happened to have an opening for a quick lesson for Sabrina. Peter took the boys and practiced with them on the green runs while Sabrina took a 3 hour private lesson. He was so impressed with how fast she learned and they were able to do a little run with her after her lesson before it got dark and it was time to come back!

The kids were thrilled to get on skis and they talked our ears off over dinner which I loved hearing their excitement. We will be back to the mountains soon and hope to get another day or two of skiing in for all of them!  We think if Sabrina gets another lesson in she will be good to go and I really hope that I can get out for a day with all of them since grandparents will be joining us on the next trip :)

It was a perfect recharge post holidays, wonderful start to a brand new year full of transitions, and I know I say it a lot but gosh I just love this crew we have! They keep us so busy and are so loud but I just wouldn't want my life any other way!
